Elephant

大象 · Dàxiàng
The gentle giant whose strength is wisdom, and whose wisdom is strength.

📜 Cultural Background

Although elephants are not native to modern China, they have held a revered place in Chinese culture since ancient times, when elephants roamed southern China during the Shang and Zhou Dynasties. The Chinese word for elephant (象, xiàng) also means "image" or "auspicious sign," giving the animal dual symbolic weight. In Buddhism — which deeply influenced Chinese culture — the elephant is associated with Shakyamuni Buddha's conception (Queen Maya dreamed of a white elephant before his birth) and represents mental strength, patience, and wisdom. Imperial elephant stables were maintained in the Forbidden City, and trained elephants participated in court ceremonies.

Symbolic Meaning

The elephant symbolizes wisdom (智慧), strength (力量), and good luck (吉祥). Its trunk, which can both uproot trees and pick up a single blade of grass, represents the combination of great power with gentle precision. An elephant with its trunk raised is considered especially lucky, as it showers blessings downward. The elephant's legendary memory also represents knowledge retention and scholarly achievement.

The gentle giant whose strength is wisdom, and whose wisdom is strength.
