Koi Carp

锦鲤 · Jǐnlǐ
The fish that swims upstream and leaps the dragon gate — persistence rewarded with glory.

📜 Cultural Background

The koi carp holds a legendary place in Chinese mythology through the tale of the Dragon Gate (龙门). According to legend, any koi that could swim upstream against the current of the Yellow River and leap over the Dragon Gate waterfall would transform into a dragon — the most powerful creature in Chinese mythology. This story made the koi the supreme symbol of perseverance, ambition, and transformation through effort. In Chinese art, koi are often depicted swimming upstream, leaping from water, or swimming in pairs — each variation carrying its own specific blessing.

Symbolic Meaning

The koi represents determination in the face of adversity and the transformation that rewards persistent effort. Because the word for fish (鱼, yú) sounds identical to "surplus" (余, yú), koi also symbolize abundance and wealth — especially when paired with lotus (连年有余, "surplus year after year"). Gold and red koi enhance wealth associations, while black koi represent overcoming obstacles and triumph over adversity.

🏠 Fēngshuǐ Application

Koi imagery is particularly powerful in the north (Career sector) — representing the upstream swim toward professional advancement. In the southeast (Wealth sector), koi amplify prosperity through the "surplus" homophone. Paintings of nine koi (eight red, one black) are considered the ultimate wealth and protection arrangement. In real fēngshuǐ practice, a koi pond in the garden's southeast corner is one of the most powerful wealth activators available.

How to Use

  • Display in the north sector for career advancement and professional persistence
  • Place in the southeast Wealth corner for abundance and financial surplus
