Gold Ingot

元宝 · Yuánbǎo
The boat-shaped vessel of prosperity — wealth that sails home and never leaves.

📜 Cultural Background

The Yuanbao (元宝, "original treasure") is the iconic boat-shaped gold and silver ingot used as currency in China from the Tang Dynasty (618–907 CE) through the Qing Dynasty. Their distinctive shape — with turned-up ends resembling a small boat — was both practical (preventing the ingot from rolling off a scale) and symbolic (a vessel that carries wealth safely). During Chinese New Year, miniature Yuanbao replicas are placed in homes and given as gifts, often tucked into red envelopes alongside cash.

Symbolic Meaning

The Yuanbao is the purest symbol of material wealth in Chinese culture. The boat shape ensures that prosperity "sails home" and, crucially, that the turned-up ends prevent wealth from spilling overboard. Stacked Yuanbao (often in groups of three) represent multiplying fortunes. Gold Yuanbao symbolize metal-element wealth, while silver ones represent steady, stable income.
