✍️ Name Analysis — Wu Ge Feng Shui

Five-Grid (五格剖象法) method for analyzing Chinese name numerology

(How to Use)

This tool uses the Wu Ge (Five-Grid) method to analyze Chinese name numerology through stroke counts, determining the auspiciousness and Five Element configuration of a name.

  • Enter the name: Type the surname in the "Surname" field (e.g. 张 or 欧阳) and the given name in the "Given Name" field (e.g. 伟 or 伟明).
  • View the Five Grids: The system automatically calculates the Heavenly, Personality, Earthly, External, and Total Grids with their stroke counts and 81-number luck ratings.
  • Five Element analysis: Each grid number corresponds to one of the Five Elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water). The system displays the elemental attribute of each grid.
  • Three Talents: The system analyzes the generating/overcoming relationships among Heaven, Person, and Earth grids to determine the auspiciousness of the Three Talent configuration.
  • Radar chart: A visual display of the Five Grid scores, helping you intuitively understand the overall energy distribution of the name.

(Cultural Background)

The Wu Ge Five-Grid method was developed by Japanese scholar Kumazaki Kenō in the early 20th century and quickly adopted in Chinese naming traditions. It assigns name strokes to five grids: Tian Ge (Heaven — ancestral fortune), Ren Ge (Person — core destiny), Di Ge (Earth — early life), Wai Ge (External — social fortune), and Zong Ge (Total — later life).

Each number maps to one of 81 numerological meanings with specific auspicious or inauspicious implications. The Three Talent configuration (the Five Element relationship among Heaven, Person, and Earth grids) is considered the most important analytical dimension — generating relationships are auspicious, while overcoming ones are inauspicious. Chinese parents often consult Wu Ge analysis when naming newborns to achieve balanced elements and lucky stroke counts.

Although originating in Japan, the Wu Ge method is deeply rooted in Chinese Yin-Yang Five Element theory and I Ching numerology. It transforms abstract metaphysics into a quantifiable numerical system, making name analysis more systematic and standardized. Today, Wu Ge analysis remains one of the most widely used naming reference methods in the Chinese-speaking world.
